Understanding Break-Even After Losses
One of the most important concepts in trading risk management is understanding that losses are not symmetrical. A 50% loss requires a 100% gain to break even — not 50%. This asymmetry is why protecting your capital is more important than maximizing gains.
The Math Behind Recovery
For example, if you lose 20% of your account, your remaining balance is 80%. To get back to 100%, you need to gain 25% of your remaining balance (20/80 = 25%). The larger the drawdown, the more disproportionate the recovery requirement becomes.
Why This Matters
- A 10% drawdown needs an 11.1% recovery — manageable
- A 30% drawdown needs a 42.9% recovery — challenging
- A 50% drawdown needs a 100% recovery — extremely difficult
- This is why professional traders never risk more than 1-2% per trade
